The Medical Center of Southeast Texas Receives "Texas Ten Step" Designation For Providing Excellent Maternity Care

 The Medical Center of Southeast Texas has taken a giant step toward improving the health of newborns and infants in Southeast Texas. The Medical Center of Southeast Texas Port Arthur Hospital has earned the Texas Ten Step Program facility designation from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission. In honor of this accomplishment, the hospital will be hosting a celebration on Tuesday, February 11th from 11am – 1pm. The celebration will take place on the Women’s Services Unit (2nd Floor). Refreshments will be served.

The Medical Center of Southeast Texas joins a growing number of Texas birth facilities that are helping to create a culture of breastfeeding support for new mothers and families. Notable improvements include:

Established monthly breastfeeding support groups, including the ONLY Spanish speaking breastfeeding class in Southeast Texas.

Established a M.O.M.S. (Moms Offering Moms Support) Group

Staffed by International Board-Certified Lactation Consultants, Certified Breastfeeding Counselors and Certified Lactation Counselors.

Implemented system-wide breastfeeding policies that focus on helping mothers maintain exclusive breastfeeding.
 

“Our dedicated staff worked hard to earn the Texas Ten Step designation and I am proud of their efforts to reach this important milestone,” said Dr. Sarah Humme, Chief Nursing Officer for The Medical Center of Southeast Texas. “We are committed to putting the health and well-being of our newest Texans at the forefront of our care and support the growing number of women in our state who are choosing to breastfeed.”
